It is very easy to buy an apartment in Egypt inexpensively. It is enough to contact a good real estate agency or an experienced realtor. But, unfortunately, agencies do not teach how to live correctly in this country, having become the happy owner of your own apartment on the shores of the Red Sea!
One of the first questions that new residents have is the suitability of tap water for drinking and cooking.
DO NOT DRINK WATER from the tap !!!!
At least the first six months! It doesn’t matter how good your filters are.
Hurghada, a few decades ago, was a small fishing village in the desert, on the seashore. Very salty sea! There are no sources of fresh water here. Most of the fresh water is supplied to the city service of Hurghada from the Nile River, through the cities of Kena and Luxor.
According to the method of delivery of this water, the housing stock of Hurghada is divided into two types:
Water is linear (water supply), here it is called state and imported (tank cars).
In both cases, water does not enter your apartment directly. First, it is pumped into the tanks on the roof, or underground, and then, when the crane is turned on, it either flows down «naturally», under pressure, or is pumped out of the ground with the help of a motor. And this is the main reason why it is categorically impossible to use this water for food!
Tanks in which water accumulates and settles are not cleaned for YEARS! In a really hot climate in Egypt! And on the walls of such tanks you can find the entire periodic table.
Local residents and old-timers of Hurghada have already developed immunity, but for those who have just arrived, I strongly advise against testing the body for strength !!!
It is not for nothing that the hotel guides give advice to tourists, even brush your teeth, ONLY with bottled water!
The easiest and safest way is to buy bottled water and use only that kind of water for the first couple of months! For both drinking and cooking. So you will give your body a chance to SLOWLY and PASSIVELY get acquainted with the local microflora. Keep in mind that even in the purchased bottles of water in Hurghada, Egyptian bacteria are found, but in minimal doses.
After a couple of months, you can safely cook food in tap water, and in a couple of months you can already make tea with such water, passing it through filters.
As stated above, the main supplier of fresh water to Hurghada is the Nile, but there are alternatives:
Most of the hotels in Hurghada have special stations that desalinate seawater. And it is this water that runs from the tap. It is fresh, clean, but no additives. This is «empty» water and is for technical purposes only. She can wash, wash, water the plants, but nothing more!
