Since the beginning of September, Egypt has reopened the pearls of the Ancient World in Luxor and Aswan for tourists, resuming tourism activities in these regions after a forced coronavirus pause. This was officially announced on Sunday by Egypt’s High Committee for Fighting the Coronavirus Crisis, headed by Prime Minister Mustafa Madbuli.
The committee announced its decision after the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled el-Anani on Thursday presented a report on the situation in Luxor Governorate. This decree applies to stationary hotels, museums, temples and other tourist attractions in both Luxor and Aswan. The Prime Minister also approved the resumption of tourist excursions to Luxor from the main Red Sea resort of Egypt — Hurghada, from where tourists, as before, will be brought to the Valley of the Pharaohs by buses, but now in accordance with antiquated standards and procedures established by the Egyptian Ministry of Health.
Meanwhile, Aswan Governor Ashraf Attiyah explained that from September Aswan will host tourist groups as part of the first phase of tourism opening. At the second stage, tourist activity will be fully resumed, this is supposed to be done before the start of the autumn-winter tourist season — from October.
Mohammed Osman, Chairman of the Committee for Marketing and Promotion of Tourism in Upper Egypt, believes that the excursion flow in Luxor and Aswan will return to pre-coronavirus values only in a year — by October 2021. And according to the forecasts of Ehab Abdel Aal, a representative of the Association for Cultural Tourism, the volume of tourist traffic will recover by February or March 2021.
