The first flight of the Turkish national carrier Turkish Airlines from Istanbul to the main Egyptian resort — Hurghada is expected on September 29. Sources at the airport told the Egyptian newspaper Egypt Independent that the frequency of flights on this route was announced once a day.
Obviously, such a high frequency suggests that Turkish Airlines plans to carry not only Turkish tourists, but also foreign tourists on these flights, who will use the connection in Istanbul. Considering that there are direct flights to Egypt from most countries where Turkish Airlines flies, the new route is most likely intended for Russian tourists. Recall that in Egypt, all international air traffic was suspended on March 19, Egyptian air traffic due to the coronavirus pandemic. But since September, air traffic between Moscow and Cairo has been restored. But there have been no direct flights from Russia to Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh for almost 5 years — since the explosion on board the Metrojet airline that took off from Sharm el-Sheikh.
In this regard, the recent interview of the Russian Ambassador to Egypt Georgy Borisenko, given to the Daily News Egypt, sounded encouraging. The diplomat said that the opening of direct charters to Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh is really not far off. “We hope to be able to resume these flights soon, but we cannot confirm a specific date when this will happen. Many Russian tourists would like to fly from Russia directly to these resorts, and by 2015 more than 3 million Russians came to rest on the Red Sea. Last year, Russian tourists also rested there, but much less — about 150’000, because they have to use connecting flights, for example, through Cairo, ”the source explained.
However, a source participating in the negotiations on the resumption of flights by Russia with tourist destinations, told the TURPROM information group that the next inspection of the Federal Air Transport Agency for the safety of Egyptian airports plans to fly to the country of Pyramids no earlier than November. Therefore, it is unlikely that charter flights from Russia to Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh can be launched earlier than December.
