Despite the crisis year for tourism, the Dive Travel magazine experts decided to hold a traditional competition, choosing the best destinations for diving tourism. “It has been a tough year for the diving industry. It has been a difficult year for the world at large. We wondered if we should even hold awards for travel, but in the end we decided that we wanted to celebrate the best of the best and do our best to ensure that people are enthusiastic about travel and scuba diving, ”the magazine experts explained.
108 different destinations, 329 underwater safaris and almost 1,100 different diving centers and resorts participated in the competition. In total, more than 11’000 applicants were presented and 30’000 votes cast within six months of voting. At the same time, the favorites of the DIVE Travel Awards 2020 — at least in directions, have not changed since the «prosperous» dock-like years.
The first place went to Indonesia, which took first place for the fourth consecutive year, again gaining more votes than most other destinations combined. Among the «fantastic islands worth visiting» for tourist divers are the islands of Gili, Nusa Penid, Lembeha island with black sand, Raja Ampata reefs and other islands in Indonesia.
In second place was Egypt — which ended up in this place only in 2019, “with great enthusiasm for a nation that has experienced a series of setbacks in its tourism industry over the past decade,” the publication adds. Two Egyptian diving centers were included in the top 10 in 2020, and about the Red Sea, the publication emphasizes that from this place many tourists «began an affair with the underwater world.»
Malaysia has reached the third place — this is the only newcomer who was previously even outside the top ten. The winning direction was helped by the victory of one of the most famous diving centers. Among the tourist attractions are the islands of Sipadan and Mabul, Tioman and the island of Perhentian, which is considered a great place for learning diving.
Also in the top ten were the following areas:
Philippines
Maldives
Fiji
Australia
Mexico
Thailand
Papua New Guinea
“Thanks to everyone who participated; we would never have been able to do this without you, and we keep our fingers crossed so that we all put on the appropriate masks as soon as possible! «
