Egypt announced the resumption of the country’s tourism sector after a long freeze due to the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
During the blockage, hotels and travel agencies in Egypt have come to a dangerous line, behind which is their complete ruin and the transfer of their assets in the form of buildings, land, offices, tourist buses to the ownership of banks. Banks of course will never be able to manage these tourist assets, like the Egyptian military, this is not their business and they do not know how to work in tourism. In addition, the authorities began to revoke licenses for a number of hotels in Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh for «illegal dismissal of qualified personnel and non-payment of salaries.» All this only increased the tension to the limit.
Against the background of its deplorable state due to the Covid-19 epidemic, Egypt’s tourism industry began to exert very strong pressure on senior government officials to end this coronavirus quarantine as soon as possible and launch tourism, which also makes up the lion’s share of the country’s budget.
And so, amid strong pressure from Egypt’s tourism sector, Tourism Minister Khaled al-Anani told Arab media late Sunday night that the country would begin opening hotels in key tourism regions such as Hurghada and Sharm el Sheikh from May 15. Hotels will first open up for domestic tourism, and then begin to receive foreign tourists.
The minister said that at the initial stage, starting from May 15, hotels will be allowed to work with a load of no more than 25% of their capacity.
To get started, hotels must apply and ensure that they adhere to World Health Organization (WHO) rules for restaurants, beach areas, laundry, social distancing and staff hygiene.
Anani also said that in the near future, domestic flights between Cairo, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh will resume, but with the obligatory incomplete load of aircraft.
The Minister stressed that negotiations are already underway to resume international flights to Egypt for foreign tourists.
