The Governor of South Sinai, Khaled Fuda, told reporters that the peninsula’s most famous resort, Sharm el-Sheikh, is now a «green city.» For this, a plant for the production of environmentally friendly paper bags will be established in Sharm El Sheikh. At the same time, the authorities will impose a ban on the delivery of plastic bags to the city. The city also plans to build a power plant using solar energy.
Fuda made the statement during a meeting organized for the South Sinai Chamber of Tourism Institutions. The topic of the meeting was the creation of measures to protect the environment and prevent the use of plastic bags. The meeting took place in the presence of top managers of Sharm el-Sheikh hotels.
The governor explained that this is only part of the authorities’ efforts to transform Sharm el Sheikh into a green and sustainable city in cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of the Environment. He added that a marina for yachts and other small boats will be created next to the «green areas» to complement the development of the Naama Bay area and turn it into an «international tourist waterfront».
Fuda previously instructed the authorities to identify a site for a plant to produce eco-friendly paper bags — alternatives to plastic bags that will be completely banned in parts of Egypt when the alternative is available.
Note that in another popular Russian tourist resort in Egypt — in Hurghada, last summer a ban was introduced on plastic dishes and plastic bags.
