After a four-year lull, despite protests from workers at the local library, which will be demolished for the project, construction of the National Museum in Hurghada is to begin. This was announced by the Minister of Antiquities Mohamed Ibrahim during a visit to archaeological sites located in the area.
According to the plan outlined in 2009, the museum was to be built on an area of 22,500 square meters. meters, and have the shape of a shell of two sections. One for the museum, restoration laboratories and storage facilities. The second will become a visitor center, where photographs and documentaries will be shown about the archaeological sites of Hurghada, and its history will be told from prehistoric times. An area of 350 square meters will be allocated for car parking. meters.
However, due to budget problems, Ibrahim and Mohamed Kamel, head of the Red Sea District, announced a decision to convert the National Library of Hurghada into an archaeological museum to promote tourism.
Adel Abdel-Satar, head of the museum sector under the Ministry of Antiquities, told Ahram Online that the museums will display about 5,000 ancient artifacts brought from local archaeological sites, including Marsa Havasis, a former harbor. which was used by the ancient Egyptians, who went to the country of Punt, which is today known as Somalia.
The library workers met the decision of the authorities with a protest. One librarian, who declined to give his real name, said the decision was wrong because only a few years ago, 3 million Egyptian pounds were spent on the construction of the library. “How can we inspire people to read if they are about to demolish a library? As a result, the doors of the only library in Hurghada will be closed, ”he said.
On Sunday, a protest was held in front of the library building, in which its employees took part.
