A new resort is planned for Egypt — we are talking about the city of New Alamein City, which is located near the northwestern coastal city of Marsa Matruh and a few miles from the Egyptian border with Libya. The government has invested billions of dollars to build a 49-acre city — including a coastal tourist area with more than 15,000 hotel rooms. The area is supposed to be skyscrapers a la Dubai, along with amusement parks, cinemas and theaters, as well as a huge commercial area.
The city will also include the Historic Quarter, which will include the Alamein military cemetery with a WWII museum, but a number of hotels, an amusement park, an open-air museum and a port services area are expected to be built in this quarter.
“The city has already changed its tourist map on the northern coast of Egypt, especially since it has become a major destination for tourists coming to the area,” Hani Younes, media adviser to the Egyptian Prime Minister, commented to Al-Monitor. For accessibility, the resort is expected to have an international airport and a railway linking the resort with Cairo and Alexandria.
